Chapter Seven
âPull over, pull over!â Max shouted. He grabbed his rifle.
The jeep continued to swerve out of control. Finally, it bumped to a halt. Pearl rolled out the side, into a ditch. Bob, and then Max, dove in after her. Max dragged Private Dixon with him.
âDixon has been hit,â Max said. His pant leg was torn and spattered with oil and blood. He was shot, too.
The machine gun fire stopped, and now they could hear boots beating the ground. They heard shouts in German. Pearlâs nostrils flared at the scent of cordite. So this is what war smells like, she thought.
âLook, there is no way we can escape,â Max rasped. âWe will have to keep our stories straight. And surrender.â He tied a white handkerchief to his rifle. He handed it to Bob, who held it aloft above the ditch.
I am a file clerk for the Red Cross in Paris, Pearl reminded herself. I am just a regular gal out for a drive. She adjusted her blouse. She had her camera, passport, and driverâs license. And of course, the microfiche containing the names and photos of German spies was still stitched into the lining of her coat. She hoped that the cigarettes dipped in truth serum that sheâd also sewed inside her coat were still OK. They could come in handyâthat is, if they survived.
The German soldiers appeared from two sides. They loomed above the Americans. Their guns shifted from target to target. Pearl raised her hands in surrender.
âGet up,â one of them said in heavily accented English. âYou are all under arrest.â
One of the soldiers barked out something to the others. He shoved Bob and Pearl up a hill to a car. He ordered them to get inside.
âWhat about them?â Pearl asked. She jerked her head in the direction of Major Pope and Private Dixon. Were they going to be slaughtered then and there, like injured racehorses?
But when Pearl looked back, she saw that Major Pope was saluting one of the German officers. They exchanged a few friendly words. Major Pope handed over a manila envelope. Pearl thought that she saw a wad of cash pass between the two men. And one of the other Germans was attending to Private Dixonâs wounds. They certainly were not being arrested. Major Pope and Private Dixon are working with the Germans! They are double agents! Pearl regretted trusting them.
âMajor Pope!â Pearl shouted. âWhatâs going on?â
He glanced over at her briefly. He turned away and said some more words in German. Then he got into one of their cars.
Maybe Major Pope had no idea that she and Bob were working for the OSS. It could be that he was turning them over so that the Germans could use them as leverage. Perhaps the Gestapo would try to trade their new captives for information. Maybe the Germans would try to swap them for prisoners of war.
But Mr. Donovan told Pearl that if anything happened during the mission, she was on her own. Somehow, she would have to escape.
